  In November 2012, artist Sarah Trouche created a performance art piece to open the second edition of the Pool Art Fair in Martinique. Naked, her body entirely covered in red paint, to symbolize the Kalina peoples, she whipped the statue of Empress Josephine for twenty minutes, summoning it to tell us the truth. For this artist, the monument is the symbol of the re-establishment of slavery, and also embodies French colonial power. Her aim is to open up a debate and encourage people to question the presence of such a statue in the public space.

  In August 2017, the violent controversy around the removal of the statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, sparked international debates over symbols and monuments to white supremacist ideology in public spaces. In September 2017, Georges-Louis Tin, president of Conseil Représentatif des Associations Noires de France (CRAN), and philosopher Louis Sala-Molin, published an open letter in French newspaper le Monde. They specificially referenced the American controvery and called out France's own homages to Colbert, enabler and organizer of the French slave trade in the 1600s during Louis XIV's reign. The open letter called for Colbert's name to be taken out of public space. From their letter: "Why Colbert? Because Louis XIV's minister laid the foundations for the Code Noir, the legal monster that legalized this crime against humanity. Colbert was also the man who founded the Compagnie des Indes Occidentales, a slave trading company of sinister memory. In other words, when it comes to slavery, Colbert symbolizes both theory and practice, at the highest level.."

  in 2018, on behalf of the Museum of London, historians Melissa Bennett, Kristy Warren and some of the original Advisory Group members organised this event to reflect on ten years of the London, Sugar & Slavery gallery. After touring the gallery and much discussion, participants, who included artists, heritage practitioners, and researchers responded on post it notes to a series of questions about the gallery. Bennett and Warren recorded those responses had ‘called for changes and updates to reflect new thinking and research, greater publicity in London and beyond, and more collaboration with schools, community groups and other black history and heritage organisations’ and some were 'critical about the gallery's overall narrative and its perceived lack of impact beyond the 2007 commemorations'. To the question 'Something that I learnt today' one of the post it notes read 'That Milligan's statue was covered in 2007' indicating the continuing debate at that time about the presence of the statue.

• 2018, Petition to remove Colbert's monument in Paris
  On 21 May 2018, Gilles Dégras (author of a satirical political newsletter in Martinique) published a petition on Avaaz.org to remove the monument to Colbert in front of the Assemblée Nationale in Paris. Here is the text explaining the purpose of the petition (in French): "La présence d'une statue de #COLBERT le père du #CodeNoir devant l'assemblée nationale française est une aberration dans une France qui se dit pays des droits de l'homme et qui a déclaré l'esclavage crime contre l'humanité." Consulted on May 24, 2023, the petition page had 3,744 signatures.
