2021, Robert Clive's descendant expresses disapproval of the Clive statue in Shrewsbury

Event

has description
In an interview with Sathnam Sanghera for Channel 4's Empire State of Mind, John Herbert, the 8th Earl of Powis stated that he wished the statue of his ancestor, Lord Clive, was not placed in the centre of the town of Shrewsbury. He said, "“There was very much a request to bring it down and there were quite strong feelings. The council resolved in the end to keep it but put a plaque on it that will tell us more. But they haven’t put the plaque on. I’ve often wondered if it ought to come down. It’s very imperial and I’ve never been very comfortable with it. I’ve always wished it wasn’t here, put it that way.”
