The London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was set up in 1981 by the Conservative government and closed down in 1998. It was a devolved UK government regeneration agency that aimed to redevelop the area of high unemployment and derelict built environment in east London following the closure of the docks – including the West India Docks. In total it covered an area 8.5 square miles, in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Southwark. LDDC developments near the West India Docks included Canary Wharf, the London Arena and the Docklands Light Railway.
