2020, Online petition to remove the Horatio Kitchener statue

Event

has description | a une description
The petition, which had 637 signatories (as of April 2nd 2024), laid out the following argument for the statue's removal:

"In life, Lord Kitchener oversaw the first ever concentrations camps during the Boer Wars. Over 100,000 black Africans were captured and while tens of thousands died, no records were kept. 25,000 white women and children died in the camps.

Now, Kitchener’s statue overlooks all of Chatham, despite having no connection with the Medway Towns whatsoever.

We need to learn our real history, not celebrate those who were responsible for mass suffering.

Take Down Kitchener!"
