- The British East India Company acquired formal control of the vast eastern provinces of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, thus turning it into a major political power in India. The grant authorised Company control over the taxes and revenues of the province, which the Company used to finance its trade and military operations. The immediate effect over the people of Bengal was utter misgovernment, exploitation, and eventual humanitarian disaster.
