- Livingstone is shown holding a bible in his left hand and his hat in his right hand. By his left foot lies a sextant, an astrolabe and an ankle shackle.
- The statue is accompanied by four relief panels:
- The front relief depicts Livingstone's work as a colonial missionary in Africa. Livingstone is reading a book to two African men and two African women. The two women are looking after two children, one of whom is breastfeeding from their mother. Livingstone is paternalistically holding the hand of the other woman. All of the African figures are depicted as partially nude.
- The relief on the left side symbolises Livingstone's work as a colonial anti-slavery activist in Africa. The image is an allegory for the nineteenth-century Arab slave-trade in East Africa. An Arab man is shown with a whip in hand and is about to strike an African woman, who is sheltering a child in her arms. Both figures are partially nude.
- The relief on the right side depicts Livingstone's work as a colonial explorer in Africa. Livingstone is holding a cartographic instrument, while an African man cuts down thicket for him. The African man is partially nude.
- The back relief lists Livingstone's date of birth and his date of death.
