English sculptor in the nineteenth century. His most notable colonial work was his bronze equestrian statue of Frederick Roberts. The statue of Roberts, which bankrupted Bates, was first installed in Kolkata, and copies were subsequently made posthumously by Henry Poole for London and Glasgow.
