On November 9, 2016, the Collectif des Cercles des Libres Penseurs Kanak et des communautés sent a letter to the Minister of Overseas France ahead of her official visit to New Caledonia, scheduled for December 6-10, as well as to the city of Nouméa and the High Commission of New Caledonia, to demand "the removal of the statue of Admiral Olry, which is a colonial symbol that still has a crippling and infantilizing coercive psychological impact on any indigenous Kanaky people who see it". A petition has been set up online to demand the statue's removal.
