In 1852, the Vendée General Council voted to erect an equestrian statue of Napoleon I in La Roche-sur-Yon, the town chosen by the emperor in 1804 to become the prefecture of the Vendée and renamed Napoleon-Vendée by the government of the Second Republic in 1848. In 1853, the town's mayor decided to erect a replica of the statue of Napoleon I recently acquired by the city of Lyon. Initiated by a subscription committee in 1849 and commissioned from sculptor Nieuwerkerke in 1850 for 70,000 francs, the statue was inaugurated with great fanfare on September 20, 1852 in Place Napoléon (now Place Carnot).
