On the night of July 17-18, 2020, the statues were knocked off their plinths. Cayenne town hall feared that the statues would be damaged or destroyed, as had happened on June 22 in Martinique. A police car had been stationed on Place Schœlcher on June 10, the day of the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in French Guiana.
