2012, Artistic intervention by Sarah Trouche, the statue of Josephine is whipped
Event
- has description | a une description
- In November 2012, artist Sarah Trouche created a performance art piece to open the second edition of the Pool Art Fair in Martinique. Naked, her body entirely covered in red paint, to symbolize the Kalina peoples, she whipped the statue of Empress Josephine for twenty minutes, summoning it to tell us the truth. For this artist, the monument is the symbol of the re-establishment of slavery, and also embodies French colonial power. Her aim is to open up a debate and encourage people to question the presence of such a statue in the public space.
