- June 14 had been a day of demonstrations in France against police violence, called by the Collectif Vérité et Justice pour Adama Traoré, and in the context of worldwide protests against police violence led by the Black movement, and on June 15, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, had just taken a stand in a televised address, affirming that France "will not debunk any statue". The inscription "esclavagiste" also appears next to the plaque on rue Victor-Hugo.
