was motivated by | le déplacement a été motivé par: In July 2020, French President Emmanuel Macron commissioned historian Benjamin Stora to produce a report on the memory of the colonization of Algeria. The report was submitted in January 2021, and made several recommendations, including the “construction of a stele in Amboise showing the portrait of Emir Abdelkader, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Algerian independence in 2022”. The mayor of Amboise, Thierry Boutard (Les Républicains), took up the suggestion and wrote to the Elysée Palace, which responded favorably. The project quickly took shape at Amboise town hall.
