2022, The statue to Colonel Georges de Villebois-Mareuil receives red paint and its base is tagged
Event
- has description | a une description
- On the evening of January 21, 2022, while members of the far-right attended a mass in memory of Louis XVI, guillotined on January 21, 1793, far-left activists organized a demonstration. During the demonstration, the statue was sprayed with red paint and the base was tagged, most likely due to Villebois-Mareuil's involvement with the extreme right at the end of the 19th century: he was one of the founders of Action Française in 1899. Nantes City Hall states that no direct physical intervention was carried out on the statue because of its involvement in colonization and the Boer War
