- On September 13, 2021, the head and upper body of Modeste Testas were discovered smeared with white paint. The media and social networks denounced this as a racist act, and the city lodged a complaint, against a backdrop where, in Bordeaux, rainbow crosswalks have been defaced with white paint, and where, across France, the throwing of white paint at statues of people living in slavery, resisting slavery or considered non-white is part of the extreme right's repertoire of action. The very next day, an art student explained that he had coated the statue with plaster to make a wild mold. According to the student concerned, this intervention was not intended as an attack or transformation, but rather as an “act of remembrance”. The city has decided to withdraw its complaint.
