The monument was commissioned by a committee formed in Saint-Pierre a few days after Victor Schœlcher's death, in January 1894, to erect a monument in his honor. The statue disappeared before its planned inauguration on July 21 (the anniversary of Schœlcher's birth), when the town was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée on April 23, 1902.
