Lewis's maternal grandfather, Sir George Cornewall 2nd Bart. (1748-1819) was the absentee slave-owner of the La Taste estate in Grenada. Sir George Cornewall 3rd Bart. (1774-1835), Lewis' uncle, inherited the estates and was awarded compensation for enslaved people after abolition.
