A memorial association formed "the day after the organization of the May 23, 1998 March, a silent demonstration that mobilized over 40,000 men and women from the French West Indies, Reunion, Guyana and mainland France, for the recognition of slavery as a crime against humanity. Today, the CM98, a national association that bears in its name the importance of this initiating March, continues its action in the rehabilitation and defense of the memory of the victims of colonial slavery."
It offers a genealogy and history workshop for Antillean families, runs a popular university and helps organize the annual commemorations of the victims of colonial slavery on May 23.
