On May 8, 1949, the monument became part of an astonishing commemorative marathon combining the 1945 victory, Jeanne d'Arc and the centenary of Galliéni's birth. According to the left-wing press, this was done to save public holidays, but also to try and forget the long and bloody repression of the Madagascar insurrection in 1947-1948, by resurrecting the figure of Galliéni.
