2023, Opposition to the removal of the statue of Mahé de la Bourdonnais the relocation of the statue of Mahé de Labourdonnais aroused the indignation of a few historians from the Université de La Réunion and secondary school history-geography teachers, backed up by idle political activists. Their sometimes pertinent but often confused comments were first relayed by a local news website and the far-right press in France. Obviously informed by internal sources, Causeur magazine had already opposed the project on June 16, 2022, denouncing the importation of "wookism" to La Réunion. Lacking coherence and, above all, determination, this opposition had little resonance. A few days after the statue was moved, reactionary essayist Dimitri Casali continued the confusion in the Journal du dimanche, writing that "to erase this past, as these new purifiers demand, would be to deny the very essence of the French soul: a republic that promotes equality, universality and secularism, without distinction of race or religion" (December 23, 2023). Two Reunionese associations, "Fort Réunion" and "Mémoire de Crève coeur", backed by lawyer Jean-Jacques Morel, a Rassemblement National activist and opposition regional councillor, are appealing to have the municipal order of November 30, 2023 concerning the "building permit allowing the statue to be removed" annulled.
