Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, now Historic England A non-departmental public body, established by the National Heritage Act 1983, to preserve the national heritage and educate the public about it. The change of names and functions of this body can cause confusion. For some years after its creation, it was known as English Heritage. However, after a major reorganisation i 2015, most of its functions were taken over by Historic England, while a charitable organisation called the English Heritage Trust manages just over 400 sites and monuments.

Historic Environment Scotland From Wikipedia: "Historic Environment Scotland (HES) (Scottish Gaelic: Àrainneachd Eachdraidheil Alba) is an executive non-departmental public body responsible for investigating, caring for and promoting Scotland's historic environment. HES was formed in 2015 from the merger of government agency Historic Scotland with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). Among other duties, Historic Environment Scotland maintains more than 300 properties of national importance including Edinburgh Castle, Skara Brae and Fort George."

La "Force noire" En 1910, le général Mangin publie un ouvrage où il affirme pouvoir recruter 10 000 soldats par an en Afrique occidentale française dans les supposées « races guerrières », c’est-à-dire les populations qui ont combattu militairement la colonisation et qui sont décrites comme des adversaires de valeur, rehaussant le mérite de la conquête coloniale. Cet ouvrage fait grand bruit en France. L’objectif est de combler avec ces soldats coloniaux le déséquilibre défavorable entre les effectifs de l’armée française et ceux de l’armée allemande. En 1914, la France est la seule puissance impériale à engager une partie de ses troupes coloniales en Europe. Plus de 160 000 soldats sont recrutés entre 1914 et 1918 en Afrique occidentale française. La conscription est en outre généralisée. Ces chiffres valident le projet du général Mangin qui n’a cependant pas été écouté par l’Etat-major lorsqu’il a proposé d’utiliser les soldats africains comme troupes de choc, à sacrifier éventuellement. Les taux de mortalité des soldats africains sont en fait comparables à ceux des simples soldats métropolitains. Les uns et les autres constituent la chair à canon de la première Guerre mondiale.
