Bell, John

Au cours de sa carrière, Bell a réalisé un certain nombre de sculptures représentant des femmes réduites en esclavage, notamment A Daughter of Eve - A Scene on the Shore of the Atlantic (1853), The Octoroon (1868) et Manacled Slave / On the Sea Shore (1877). Bien que Bell ait présenté ses sympathies abolitionnistes dans ces sculptures, ses œuvres ont également été critiquées pour avoir réifié le corps de la femme noire par des allusions à la notion de sexualité illicite.
